How Executive Function Coaching and Therapy Complement One Another-Part 2

Last week I wrote a blog about the complementary nature of executive function coaching and therapy. I discussed the ways in which each service is distinct, as well as where there are overlaps. How executive function coaching can support your therapy work:

An executive function coach can…

  • Serve as another person to reinforce the concepts you’re learning in therapy and help you make note of everyday and/or academic situations that connect to your therapy goals.
  • Serve as a source of motivation and accountability to help you implement the recommendations made in therapy, such as improving your sleep hygiene, widening your social circle, or increasing your positive self-talk.
  • Consult with your therapist to provide examples of your everyday struggles and mindset towards them.
  • Provide a safe space for metacognitive and self-reflection discussions, which can serve as a stepping stone if you are not yet ready to embark on therapy or are questioning your current style of therapy. These discussions can promote a new openness to trying therapy or exploring new therapy modalities/approaches.

How therapy can support your executive function work:

A therapist can…

  • Address anxiety, depression, perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, or negative self-talk/narratives, all of which can present a significant barrier to coaching because they reduce your motivation and openness to trying new problem-solving strategies.
  • Provide a big picture, comprehensive understanding of the mental and emotional barriers facing you and guide you (and your executive function coach) in choosing motivation and routine-building strategies that would work best.
  • Help you to build coping strategies for managing daily life and novel tasks, freeing up energy for taking on new goals and challenges.

How Executive Function Coaching and Therapy Complement One Another-Part 1

At a recent NESCA case conference, we had a thought-provoking discussion about the relationship between executive function coaching and therapy that inspired me to write this two-part blog series.

Executive function coaching is different from therapy in a few key ways:

  • Most executive function coaches are not trained mental health professionals.
  • Therapy is usually positioned to treat mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, OCD, and related emotional patterns.
  • Executive function coaching focuses more directly on improving cognitive skills and strategies (like planning, organizing, prioritizing, time management, focus, and self-regulation) to support clients in reaching their academic, professional, and personal goals.
  • Executive function coaching is often more practical and solution-oriented, while many therapy approaches focus on exploring past experiences and deepening a client’s understanding of themselves.

But there can also be overlap between the two supports:

  • Executive functioning and mental health both impact an individual’s self-regulation and ability to cope with daily life.
  • Executive function coaches and therapists might both implement skill-based activities with clients.
  • Executive function coaches and therapists both focus on improving an individual’s well-being by identifying challenges, setting goals, developing strategies, and building self-awareness.

The truth is that the work we executive function coaches do with our clients frequently relates to their mental health and emotional struggles. For example, we may help individuals strengthen their ability to regulate impulses; reflect inward to better understand their habits and patterns in behavior; move past low motivation to activate and take action; adapt their behavioral patterns to better meet their needs and goals; implement self-care routines; and tackle the logistical challenges of accessing other services, such as therapy.

Additionally, persistent mental health struggles (as well as a person’s naturally fluctuating emotional states) play a large role in a person’s ability to access their prefrontal cortex or “thinking brain,” where our executive function abilities reside. This is because emotional regulation and executive control are both housed in this part of the brain. When one skill set is taxed, the other suffers. Correspondingly, persistent executive function struggles can contribute to increased mental health struggles, such as anxiety or depression.

Given the connected nature of executive functioning and mental health, we recognize that executive function coaching and therapy are distinct, but are also connected and complementary. The two services not only balance each other, but help to amplify the success and effectiveness of each individual service.

What Sets Executive Function Coaching Apart from Other Study Skill Supports?

As families and schools are putting more focus on the importance of study skills for their child’s academic success, the idea of executive function coaching has become more mainstream. There are now more apps, online courses, school curriculum, and private companies offering this kind of support.  When I give families examples of executive functioning skills – organization, planning, time management, focus, prioritization – they immediately recognize them and see how their child could benefit from strengthening these skills. However, it can be difficult to understand exactly how (and why) hiring a 1-on-1 executive function coach is such an effective way to support a child’s executive function development.

While executive function skills overlap with study skills, they go beyond that. They are foundational higher-order cognitive skills that are required for every individual to engage in goal-directed behavior, which is, well…almost everything! Yes, executive function skills are necessary when your child wants to create and execute a study plan for their upcoming math exam, but they are also necessary in order for your child to wake up each morning and complete their morning routine in time to get to school at 8:00am.

A properly trained executive function coach has training and expertise in these cognitive skills and their development, and are equipped with strategies for strengthening these skills across multiple contexts. These strategies may include some of the “tips & tricks” you’ve read about online (e.g. Set a 5-min timer and see how much cleaning you can get done!), but they also include the use of coaching methodologies to guide an individual in recognizing patterns in their past experiences, identifying core barriers, and establishing meaningful goals in their life. Every day in my coaching, I make use of the training I received in my post-graduate coursework, and being a part of a group practice affords me the added benefit of pulling from the knowledge and perspectives of several masters- and doctorate-level occupational therapists, transition specialists, special educators, and neuropsychologists. 

A partnership with a trained coach offers structured, consistent, and personalized instruction that builds executive function skills in a clear progression towards a student’s goals and greater independence. Unlike using online focus apps or joining a group study-skills class, a 1-on-1 coach, especially one that has been thoughtfully matched with your child based on specialty area and personality, is able to facilitate a real connection and trust with a student. This relational approach is essential for sustainable student engagement and effective individualized support.

My colleague Sara LaFerriere perfectly described this when she said, “It’s hard for students to understand their full potential if the providers they work with can’t make a connection with them.” Aside from the increased effectiveness of a 1-on-1 coach, it’s just plain nice for a student to have another trusted adult in their corner, especially when they are struggling and feeling vulnerable (and especially when their parents or caregivers are at the end of their ropes from repeated attempts to improve their child’s executive function challenges).

On the family side, hiring an executive function coach beefs up your child’s support team. At NESCA, we put a lot of weight on collaboration, not just within our practice, but with other professionals. Whenever possible, I like to initiate communication across my students’ different service providers. For me, it provides a more robust understanding of my students and helps me ensure my coaching is aligned with the work they’re doing in other areas of their life. For families, it can provide relief to know that everyone on their child’s team is on the same page and working towards the same big-picture goals. A coach can even serve as another line of communication between a child and their family, sharing feedback with parents about the interventions and strategies that work best for their child, and giving parents ideas for successfully implementing strategies at home.

The Power of Body Doubling

Have you heard of body doubling before? Body doubling is when two (or more) people lend each other their presence while doing individual work. You can think of it as a “buddy system” for productivity. Having another person with us while we work can increase our motivation to start a task, boost our focus, and even have a calming effect. In fact, the sheer act of scheduling a body doubling session with someone helps hold us accountable to our to-do list.

Body doubling is a powerful accountability strategy that I use with my clients as well as with friends and family. If you think about it, it’s likely that you have used this strategy, too. Have you ever silently studied in a group, with a friend, or in a public space such as a library or cafe? That was body doubling! What about calling up a friend and scheduling a time to go to the gym together? Body doubling! Do you ever chat with a friend while you cook, fold laundry, or grocery shop? Once again, body doubling! (It doesn’t always have to be silent.)

Body doubling is a foundational strategy that I explore with many clients – first explaining the concept and benefits of it, and then providing them with opportunities to practice it.  We may start by body doubling during our video calls, testing out if it’s more effective to keep cameras on or off, mics muted or not, screens shared or not. We’ll experiment with duration to see what’s enough time to get work done, but not too much time to get distracted. Our goal is to find the sweet spot where body doubling is supportive, but not distracting. We also implement structures to make body doubling time as productive as possible. This may look like using a prep checklist to make sure my client has all the materials they need to work; establishing a work plan that includes a goal and the first steps to take; or determining checkpoints when they want me to interrupt with prompts or reminders.

This structured practice is particularly effective because we have fostered a safe and collaborative coaching relationship that is centered on getting work done. With this guided practice, my clients can dip their toes into the world of body doubling and prepare to utilize this strategy on their own – with a natural resource (a person or group of people who is available in their everyday life).

As my clients build independence, we discuss creative ways for them to incorporate this strategy into their everyday lives. We’ll go through the list of people in their lives and think through who would make good body-doubling partners, and who would make socializing too big a temptation to resist. We might remove the temptation to talk altogether and body double with a pet dog or rabbit. I’ve even worked with clients to create “asynchronous” body doubling where they listen to audio messages from friends while they get house chores done.

As body doubling has become more popular, people have found ways to incorporate technology and social media. The YouTube channel @MerveStudyCorner has videos of various lengths showing a person studying in different locations. The Dubbii App by @adhd_love_provides body doubling videos specifically for individuals with ADHD. The FLOWN app offers “coworking” drop-in or power sessions. And some people are hosting TikTok Live while doing chores or working on homework so you can tune in and join. Very clever!

Body doubling is an adaptable and powerful strategy that can help anyone boost productivity, focus, and accountability. Whether you’re experimenting with silent study sessions, enlisting a friend to tackle errands, or exploring innovative tech tools, there’s no shortage of ways to make this strategy work for you. The Importance of College Campus Resource Planning

This year I’ve started working with a new batch of freshmen who are embarking on their college journeys. The first semester is always a whirlwind of emotions: nervousness, excitement, anticipation, but most of all, overwhelm. Even at colleges that prioritize supporting students in their transition to campus life, it can be hard for students to navigate the sea of information they’re given. However, the first several weeks of the semester are the perfect time to explore the various campus resources available to students, many of which are included in the cost of tuition.

Even if students don’t use resources right away, it’s essential for them to be aware of the available services as they progress through their college journey. Understanding what’s offered can help them navigate challenges and take advantage of opportunities when the need arises.

Given that each college (and student!) is different, I work with my clients to create a personalized spreadsheet where they not only compile information on each campus resource, but also make note of how, when, and why they would use each resource.

Students may also want to create step-by-step plans for various college situations:

Organizing all this information can be daunting and time-consuming, so it’s often helpful to work through it with someone else. Consider reaching out to your college’s Disability/Accessibility Services to get a clearer understanding of the campus resources available to you. Ask if you can collaborate with someone in that office to create your own personalized spreadsheet tailored to your needs. Don’t hesitate or feel rushed–remember, these resources are included in your tuition because navigating college life takes a village. This is your college experience, so take full advantage of it!

At August’s Democratic National Convention, Gus Walz, the teenage son of Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz and his wife Gwen, melted hearts throughout the country with his outward show of emotions upon his father’s nomination. He exhibited deep love and pride for his dad in that moment. His tearful cheers evoked a sense of tenderness among many, confusion for others, and, sadly, public mockery, as well. At that time, many people were unaware that Gus carries the diagnosis of Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD or NVLD) – a cognitive processing profile that often impacts emotion regulation and social cognition; however, his family’s openness about his condition has brought new attention to this profile.

There is often lack of awareness or confusion about what a NLD is. While NLD has been long-discussed in the neuropsychological and educational world, it has not been formally recognized by the medical field due to variability within individual profiles and lack of clarity on its causal factors. While this is so, there is a very clear pattern that is noted through the neuropsychological evaluation process. And most importantly, there is a breadth of interventions and supports to address NLD-related challenges, highlighting the importance of identifying and understanding this profile in children.

By definition, NLD is a relative strength in left-brain skills, which are largely verbal, and weakness in right-brain nonverbal skills. As such, to understand NLD, it is important to understand the right hemisphere of the brain.

The right side of the brain is responsible for the collection and integration of multiple sources of information, particularly sensory information, lending to an organized “big picture” understanding of events or information. The right brain is thus not only important for basic visual processing and reasoning, but it is also responsible for the organization and coordination of information and skills across a wide range of domains, including learning, motor coordination, self-regulation (e.g. sensory regulation and attention), social thinking, and task management.  As such, the word learning within the “Nonverbal Learning Disability” title is somewhat of a misnomer, as NLD can impact functioning across most any domain.

It is important to understand that NLD is a relative deficit, meaning that it is a personal weakness. Some individuals with NLD may have nonverbal skills that are all technically “average or better,” but they are still discrepant from that person’s strong verbal skills, causing variability within the profile.

Because many students with NLD have strong verbal reasoning, processing, and memory skills, they are often able to compensate and fly under the radar for some time. However, their over-reliance on verbal skills and rote learning tend to become less effective once they are tasked with the abstract demands of middle and high school. As such, while some individuals with NLD may be identified at a young age, others may not be flagged until much later.

As already stated, although NLD profiles can vary significantly, there are fairly predictable patterns that allow for its accurate identification, namely within the following areas:

Visual Reasoning – On structured intellectual assessment, individuals with NLD demonstrate a significant difference between their verbal and visually-based reasoning, with verbal being better. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, which is currently in its fifth edition and is the most commonly used intellectual test for children, contains two domains of visually-based reasoning. One is the Visual Spatial index, which contains more concrete puzzle-like tasks, and the Fluid Reasoning index, which assesses abstract pattern recognition. At times individuals with NLD struggle with both domains, while other times they may only demonstrate impairment within one. Because there are many factors that can contribute to challenges within either one of these visual domains, a proper NLD diagnosis can only be made through collection of a thorough history, direction observation, and the assessment of other associated challenges, detailed below.

Visual Processing and Perception – In spite of having perfectly fine vision, individuals with NLD have difficulty managing visual input. This may include problems with tracking lines while reading, difficulty discerning visual details (e.g. differentiating math or letter symbols, recognizing errors when editing their writing, misreading graphs and charts, etc.), or difficulty creating mental imagery (i.e. “seeing” and holding information in one’s head).

Motor Integration – Individuals with NLD demonstrate some level of motor integration or coordination difficulties. This may involve fine motor skills (e.g. poor handwriting and spacing on the page, difficulty tying shoes and using utensils, etc.), gross motor skills (e.g. clumsiness, awkwardness when running, poor hand-eye coordination, etc.), or both. Most often, individuals with NLD have appropriate motor strength, but they struggle to appropriately integrate and manage their movements within space and present demands. This may also correspond to difficulties with directionality and finding their way around, causing them to get lost easily.

Social Skills – Individuals with NLD most often meet early social milestones without any concern. In fact, some individuals with NLD may demonstrate early verbal precociousness that gives the appearance of advanced social engagement, which is aided by the fact that individuals with NLD generally possess appropriate foundational pragmatic skills, particularly when one-on-one or with adults. However, as these children grow older, they continue to over-rely on verbal language and miss out on nonverbal language (e.g. body signals) and context clues. As such, children with NLD may misperceive or misinterpret situations or interactions, or they may become overwhelmed by the complexity of typical peer interactions, causing them to withdraw. Often times, individuals with NLD know what they “should do” socially, but they struggle to actually generalize those skills to interactions.

Executive FunctioningExecutive functioning refers to a complex set of skills that are responsible for an individual’s ability to engage in goal-directed behavior. This includes skills necessary for self-regulation, such as impulse control, attentional management, and emotional control, as well as skills for task management and cognitive regulation, such as organizing materials, creating a plan, starting a task and sustaining effort, prioritizing and organizing ideas, holding information in memory, etc. Individuals with NLD likely have some executive function strengths, particularly when they can rely on their verbal strengths; however, they are likely to demonstrate significant challenges with the executive function skills that rely on “big picture awareness,” such as organization, integration, planning, prioritizing, time management, and self-monitoring. Individuals with NLD are detail-focused – they often miss the forest for the trees. For some, they compensate by redoing work and over-exerting their efforts, eventually achieving a semblance of desired outcomes at the cost of time and energy; others may produce work that misses the main point of the task or demonstrates a lack of understanding; and others may just become overwhelmed and give up, appearing to lack “motivation.”

Learning – With the above profile, individuals with NLD tend to rely on rote learning, as they do well with concrete repetition of verbal information. However, they may have difficulty flexibly applying this knowledge, and they are likely to struggle with tasks that require more abstract, “big picture” thinking. Parents and teachers of individuals with NLD often report frustration because problems with information retrieval, pattern recognition, and generalization of skills can result in these individuals making the same mistakes over and over again, not seeming to learn from their errors.

Due to the above learning challenges, children with NLD often struggle with math reasoning, doing best with rote calculations than application of knowledge. Challenges with reading comprehension and written expression are also common, as they not only struggle to see the main idea and integrate information, but they also struggle to “see” the images or story in their head. For younger children with NLD, problems with mental imagery may be mistaken for a reading disability, such as dyslexia, due to difficulties holding, appreciating, and learning letters, numbers, and sight words.

Other Associated Challenges – Because the right hemisphere of the brain coordinates and manages sensory input and complexity, individuals with NLD are at higher risk for challenges with self-regulation. This may include sensory sensitivities, variable attention, or difficulties with emotion regulation. As such, those with NLD may demonstrate heightened anxiety or emotional reactivity that is only further-challenged by the complexity of their learning profile. Because of this, individuals with NLD often rely on a rigid, predictable routine. There is a high rate of comorbid, or co-occurring, diagnoses in individuals with NLD, including things such as ADHD, anxiety disorders, specific learning disabilities, and potentially autism spectrum disorder. Because of this, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of each individual’s profile before devising their intervention plan.

What do we do to support individuals with NLD?

The supports set into place can be widely variable depending on the individual child’s profile. Some of the most common recommendations include social skills interventions that target “higher level” skills, such as social perspective taking and problem solving; executive function instruction that aims to teach task management skills, develop “big picture” thinking, and generalize skills across tasks and settings; academic remediation for any specific domain of impairment, potentially including math reasoning, reading comprehension, or written expression; and occupational therapy services to develop skills, such as handwriting and/or keyboarding, visual processing, and motor coordination.

It is important to understand that individuals with NLD struggle with abstraction, so concrete, explicit instruction, with frequent repetition, is often key. This not only applies to academic instruction, but also therapy or instruction in daily living skills at home. Things need to be rehearsed “in real time,” as there needs to be a plan for how to ensure skills translate to life.

Self-advocacy most often needs to be directly taught by first increasing self-awareness, as it may be difficult for individuals with NLD to recognize the patterns within their challenges or self-monitor when support may be needed.

There are many useful resources for further understanding ways to support individuals with NLD. One comprehensive resource is the NVLD Project (https://nvld.org/), a nonprofit organization that conducts research, offers educational workshops and community outreach, and has an extensive list of NLD-related resources for parents, clients, and schools.

Because NLD profiles can be variable, complex, and clouded by co-occurring challenges, a thorough neuropsychological evaluation can be a critical step toward fully understanding an individual child’s needs and thinking about how they will be best supported not just in school, but also in their day to day life. Allow Them to be Challenged! (Examples of Balancing Support with Challenge): Part 2

Last week’s blog discussed the “zone of proximal development” and the importance of providing young people with calculated challenges in order to facilitate their executive function development (https://nesca-newton.com/allow-them-to-be-challenged-building-childrens-executive-functions-part-1/). Because the balance between providing support and allowing challenge is highly individual, I wanted to write a follow-up blog providing some examples of how this balance can be implemented:

EXAMPLE 1: A middle schooler is struggling to turn in their assignments on time, even when they already have them completed.

EXAMPLE 2: An elementary-aged child is struggling to keep their work desk clean, and it’s causing a lot of conflict and stress during homework time.

EXAMPLE 3: A high school student wants to find a summer job so they can earn some money and build their resume.

Remember that every child and family is unique, and there is no one right answer. It may take time to find the right balance for your child, but it is well worth the effort!

Allow Them to be Challenged! (Building Children’s Executive Functions): Part 1

Executive function – the ability to engage in goal-directed behaviors, such as planning, organization, focus, and self-regulation – is a set of cognitive skills that all individuals possess and use on a daily basis.

Like any skill, each person’s executive function is at varying stages of proficiency and development. Furthermore, a person’s day-to-day capacity for executive functioning can fluctuate based on a variety of factors, including age, cognitive profile, environment demands, emotional state, physical illness, stress, mental health, etc.

As the role of executive function in learning, working, and general life tasks is becoming more widely acknowledged and understood, it is also becoming more common to make accommodations for young people to support their executive function challenges. It is exciting to see more of this consideration and inclusion; however, I often find myself in conversations with families, educators, and related professionals regarding the difficulty of balancing executive function support and accommodation with allowing space and opportunities for growth and skill development.

How can we resist the temptation to completely alleviate a young person’s struggle, especially when we know that the individual needs opportunities to practice the executive function skills they are attempting to master? It comes down to exposing young people to calculated challenges.

Facing challenges is an important part of learning and developing independence. It is also important to be thoughtful about the level of challenge we present to an individual. In my coaching, I like to think of Lev Vygotsky’s theory of learning in which every person has a “zone of proximal development” that encompasses the skills or tasks that they cannot yet do on their own, but that they can achieve with guidance or assistance (often referred to as “scaffolding”). When a learner receives support attempting a task that is just beyond their individual reach or capacity, it allows them to stretch their skills and current knowledge. With guidance and repeated practice, the learner develops the ability to utilize the skills and knowledge independently; their zone of proximal development shifts, and they can tackle more complex and challenging skills (citation).

Challenge is essential to growth. But finding a person’s zone of proximal development is not an exact science – it’s individual, shifts with time and circumstances, and it can be difficult in the moment to know if you’ve struck the right balance between supporting your child while simultaneously allowing for sufficient challenge.

You may be thinking, “What’s too little challenge? What’s too much? Is my child facing an overwhelming amount of executive function demands, or are these challenges good growing and learning opportunities for them?” Next week’s blog will give a few examples of how parents and caretakers may be able to balance support vs. calculated challenge. And, in the meantime, consider collaborating with an executive function coach! It’s a great way to answer these questions and learn how to independently identify the appropriate level of challenge for your child.

Building Executive Function Skills over the Summer

As the countdown to Summer begins post April vacation, teens are getting excited for this season of rest, with more time to socialize and spend their days doing the things they want to do. While the first two weeks tend to be filled with high energy and plans, as the summer continues, the energy starts to slow down and boredom sets in. This part of the summer is a great time for adolescents to lean into building executive functioning skills that they may not have had time to practice fully during the school year. And the planning to do so should begin now, prior to the summer, instead of introducing this when they already feel unmotivated.

Executive dysfunction is supported through the school year with structure, routines, consistent visual schedules, online calendars, reminders, and many other external supports. As noted in previous blog posts for students with executive functioning challenges, the focus during the school year can easily fall into a pattern of “putting out fires” or providing intense support to catch up on never-ending assignments, instead of proactive skill building. The summer offers a low-pressure environment for students to practice planning, organizing, following through, and self-monitoring.

Some ways to practice and build these skills might include:

  • Manage their own schedule. Have your adolescent practice keeping a weekly schedule. Teens can print off a blank weekly schedule or utilize a digital version to list what needs to be accomplished each week (work, appointments, chores, exercise, social, hobbies, small goals) and plug these into a weekly checklist or visual calendar. At the end of each week, teens can reflect on how much they were able to follow the system they tried and what obstacles got in the way of anything they didn’t accomplish.
  • Practice setting alarms. Even if it’s for 10:15 AM (or later) and actually waking up at the time they needed to is important all year long. Allow them to troubleshoot if they sleep in, including what routine can they shift from the night before to meet this?
  • Set their own appointments. Is there a dentist appointment that needs to be made or a car service that family needs completed? Have your teen take ownership of calling or going online to make the appointment, tracking the appointment, and following through with going to the appointment.
  • Household chores. Ask your teen to take ownership of one part of the home (e.g., mowing the lawn). Work to schedule out how often throughout the summer this job needs to be completed and set a plan for how to follow through with this responsibility.
  • Make a meal for the family. Following through with all the steps included (finding a recipe, budgeting, food shopping, prepping, managing the timing of each item that needs to be cooked) is a great way to practice executive functioning skills.
  • Get a summer job. Working is a great way to build many executive functioning and self-determination skills for teens. Not only does it add structure to the week, it also helps with regulation and provides social opportunities.

How the Pandemic Changed In-Person Learning

Among the parts of my job that I find most meaningful are the conversations I get to have with parents during intake and feedback sessions. During an intake, much of the emphasis is on history taking. Some of it isn’t very exciting; trust me, I get that it can be tedious to review information like how much your child weighed at birth, how many ear infections they had, and when they learned to walk. Yet so often the information parents are able to share about a child’s history is crucial. There’s a quote attributed to Michael Ventura that says, “Without context, a piece of information is just a dot. It floats in your brain with a lot of other dots and doesn’t mean a damn thing. Knowledge is information-in-context… connecting the dots.” The history parents share provides essential context that helps us piece together and make sense of the data we get from doing an assessment in the office.

In recent years, we’ve added questions about COVID-19 to help us understand how that experience has impacted the children and teens we work with. I regularly ask parents, “How old was your child when COVID-19 hit? What grade were they in and how long did remote learning go on? When did they return to in-person instruction?” During a recent intake with a parent, I got an answer I wasn’t expecting. A very thoughtful and perceptive mom gave me some dates and ages then paused for a moment and added, “But even though they’re back in school, I don’t think learning has ever been the same since COVID.” I asked her to tell me more, and we had a wonderfully thought-provoking conversation. As so often happens, I learned a great deal from a parent. Since that time, I’ve extended the discussion to include some of my very insightful colleagues, who have also shared their thoughts. The consensus is that “in-person learning” in 2024 doesn’t mean the same thing it did in 2019. So, what’s changed?

Yes, students are, for the most part, sitting at desks inside classrooms rather than connecting remotely from their desks (or kitchen tables or couches) at home, but what happens in the classroom and beyond is different in some important ways.

  • Technology: In speaking with parents and colleagues in different fields, I’ve repeatedly heard that pandemic-related school closures “accelerated the use of technology” and “online learning platforms” in education. There was certainly a need to use online learning platforms during the pandemic, and the extent to which schools incorporated technology speaks to ingenuity and flexibility in the face of an unexpected and incredibly challenging situation. Moreover, technology is a wonderful tool that can be used to enhance learning in many ways. That being said, many parents and colleagues have observed that schools never went back to “how information and tasks were managed pre-COVID.” That is, technology and online platforms have remained a part of the learning experience. The challenge for some students is that even within the same school system, there can be a great deal of variability between the specific platforms individual teachers use and how they make use of them. Especially for students who struggle with anxiety or executive functioning weaknesses, keeping track of and switching between different platforms and applications for different classes can be overwhelming.
  • Different Teaching Methods: One of the trends I’ve observed directly and have gotten feedback on from others has to do with how teachers provide instruction in the classroom. Compared to “the before times,” the post-pandemic years have seen a rise in independent learning, even within the context of the classroom. More often, teachers have students work independently, whether that means reading through Google slides at their desks or completing worksheets and tasks on their own. There seems to be less direct teacher-led instruction and an increased reliance on independent learning, which often incorporates use of technology, such as Chromebooks, in the classroom. While some students thrive when given the freedom and flexibility to learn on their own, many students learn best when provided with instruction using more direct, structured, and an interactive approach.
  • The Boundaries are Blurred: Working adults will relate to this phenomenon. Back before COVID-19, many of us had pretty clear boundaries separating our work lives from our personal lives. We commuted to an office or other workplace, worked for a set time period, then went home. That all changed when many non-essential employees pivoted to working from home at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown. Suddenly our kitchens or bedrooms were transformed from private living areas to undefined spaces that housed both our personal lives and our work lives. And our work and home lives bled into each other as we tried to fit in work when we could, especially if we were also home-schooling or caring for children all day. Though many employees are back to the office at least to some extent, the boundaries remain somewhat blurred. The same phenomenon has happened for students. There is a “24-7 connectedness” that technology enables, which has both pros and cons. Because a lot of schools still use online platforms for assigning, submitting, and grading homework, teachers can post assignments at any time. One parent described a sense of assignments popping up online “like Jenga blocks, one layered in after another.” Similarly, students can turn in assignments at any hour of the day or night. One of my colleagues has observed that this has negatively impacted sleep habits for some students. Another colleague astutely pointed out that, not only can this be overwhelming for students, but it may also be contributing to some of the burn-out many teachers are experiencing.

Education has been perhaps permanently altered by the pandemic, just as many of us have been. The changes that have occurred bring benefits and challenges that our students and teachers are still adjusting to. I don’t have answers or solutions, but I know that I’m going to be adding to the questions I ask parents about COVID-19, education, and the impact on their student. It’s still important for me to learn when a student resumed “in-person learning,” but I’m no longer going to assume that phrase means the same thing it’s always meant. Instead, I’ll be asking parents to tell me what in-person learning looks like now, because the reality is that none of us has gone back to life circa 2019. Just like all of us, our students are living in the “new normal,” and we need to understand it so that we can support them in benefiting from the opportunities it brings and in navigating the challenges it poses.

Maggie Rodriguez, Psy.D., provides comprehensive evaluation services for children, adolescents, and young adults with often complex presentations. She particularly enjoys working with individuals who have concerns about attention and executive functioning, language-based learning disorders, and those with overlapping cognitive and social/emotional difficulties.

Prior to joining NESCA, Dr. Rodriguez worked in private practice, where she completed assessments with high-functioning students presenting with complex cognitive profiles whose areas of weakness may have gone previously undiagnosed. Dr. Rodriguez’s experience also includes pre- and post-doctoral training in the Learning Disability Clinic at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Neurodevelopmental Center at MassGeneral for Children/North Shore Medical Center. Dr. Rodriguez has spent significant time working with students in academic settings, including k-12 public and charter school systems and private academic programs, such as the Threshold Program at Lesley University.

Dr. Rodriguez earned her Psy.D. from William James College in 2012, where her coursework and practicum training focused on clinical work with children and adolescents and on assessment. Her doctoral thesis centered on cultural issues related to evaluation.

Dr. Rodriguez lives north of Boston with her husband and three young children.  She enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and bike riding with her family, practicing yoga, and reading.
